Accessing ArtyPantz Productions LLC at Tax Time

Oh my. This is the time of year to prepare for the annual meeting with our accountant. It is amazing that every year I have no idea how much was made or how much was spent until this moment. One thing for sure is that its never any where near what I used to make in the field of sales. Leaving that for ART and KIDS was one of those defining moments that I don't regret. However I did choose the two most undervalued areas of society. The dollars and sense of it can be sobering.

Every year, despite the intention of having all my receipts organized by category and month, the reality is that they are stuffed into drawers, in the overhead compartment of my car, in a basket here and a vase there......also had to go online to print receipts and bank statements, etc.

Soooo, here I sit with a big mound of  them, separating them into piles, stapling them together, adding them up, etc......Got all that done!

Now moving on to figuring out how much money came through the door. I'm happy to report that in  spite of the economy, it was the best year ever.

Also looking at what has been accomplished/accumulated since the beginning of all of this, encompassing ArtyPantz and the WrapADoodle Swaddle Blanket.

  • Two established websites and two blogs, plus guest blogging on other sites
  • Five original, fun stories with positive, meaningful content
  • Many happy customers
  • Hundreds of beautiful handmade puppets, props, costumes, etc.
  • Everything needed to turn these stories into unique children's books....a plan for the not too distant future
  • a fully stocked art studio including EVERYTHING one would need to create ANYTHING!
  • a fully stocked office including an amazing commercial printer
  • a fully stocked sewing studio including sewing machines, fabric, sewing tables, etc
  • inventory of original collage art paper dolls, coloring  books and more
  • a comprehensive library of art reference books
  • designed my own fabrics for WrapADoodles to be printed on organic cotton
This was the best year ever and feeling  very positive about what the future holds.

Will the Real Mother's Day Please Stand Up

It's two days past Mother's Day and just today mailed the package with the present that will get to my mother in a week. I tried to call her a few times on Sunday but her phone was always busy, probably the other kids calling to successfully wish her a Happy Mother's Day, on the Real Mother's Day. I never made it through, and forgot all about it yesterday. I just tried to call her tonight and the line is busy again!

Fortunately, she is not the type to get upset over this and that's good because neither do I. I have made my mother a special gift for every Mother's Day since I was old enough to hold a crayon, and will continue to do so till I can't. Who cares when she gets it. Not her. Not me.

I was planning to mail the gift package last week, but couldn't find a box that fit, then couldn't find any bubble pack, then when I did and got it wrapped up nice and safely, the UPS store was closed.....so decided to mail it but kept forgetting to put it back into the car.

Today when I handed it over to the mailman at the post office and told him it was a Mother's Day gift he laughed and said that somebody had just come in with the same kind of package.

Our daughters called me on the Real Mother's Day. They made me beautiful artistic gifts like they always do. One of the gifts will be mailed in a few weeks and the other one was one piece of a set that will come later as well. My husband and son gave me a GPS gadget. A few nights earlier we all went out to dinner together, and called it a Mother's Day dinner.

One of our daughters, who is named after my mother, lives across the country minutes from her. She joined my mother and my sisters for a Mother's Day brunch, and I'd asked if she'd deliver the Mother's Day message. Apparently when my daughter, sisters and mother are together they feel like I'm with them.....because my mother and sisters remind my daughter of me, and my daughter reminds my mother and sisters of me......
How saaaaweeet is that?

My mom's line is busy everytime I call her......but maybe tonight I can get through to wish her a Happy Mother's Day! It's today isn't it?

Do You Think People are Stupid?

My husband says most people are stupid
and I've argued for years that they are not.
Today I came to the startling realization that he sees the world as it is,
and I see the world as I want it to be.

I Love You Eileen Mooney

A special person that I and many others knew and loved just died suddenly, unexpectedly. She simply, constantly, unflinchingly radiated love and light to all. I feel her love still, and will never stop feeling it. It has been a very emotional and tearful time because she so loved and already deeply missed, but just because she is "gone" does not mean that her light went out. She is still a beautiful shining light and a brilliant star.
"Wert thou to attain but a dewdrop of the crystal waters of divine knowledge,
thou wouldst readily realize that true life is not the life of the flesh,
but the life of the spirit.
For the life of the flesh is common to man and animals,
whereas the life of the spirit is possesed only by the pure in heart
who have quaffed from the ocean of faith
and partaken of the fruit of certitude.
This life knoweth no death,
and this existence is crowned by immortality"

Love for One Another as a Foundation for Government

Are Democrats and Republicans really parties of the people? No, they are actually slumber parties. Both staying up all night talking, not getting anything done.

The world is changing at such a rapid pace, innovation is everywhere, so why not in the government? We're running around in circles. Everybody is down on the government, and that's a good thing. Because we clearly need a new system for how to live together on this planet. I really see something dramatically different in our future. How about a system based on love for one another? Why not? It's really age (the one we live in now) appropriate.

The seesaw is way off on one side. The extremes of poverty and wealth are more extreme than ever. The world is owned by corporations! So is the media. It's so hard to find out what the truth is and make an informed decision about anything these days. Infomation has been replaced by agendas.

Celebrity judges deciding small claims cases make millions of dollars a year, way, way, way more than our Supreme Court judges who make major decisions that affect the course of our nation. (Judge Judy 25 million per year, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court $223,500 per year.)

I don't qualify for a traditional small business loan because, well the not so funny but true answer is that I can't afford it. This follows the same wierd logic that makes poor people pay higher interest rates, and keeps many people from being able to buy a house just because they don't have a large down payment. These same people work just as hard as anybody else, and make monthly rent payments in the same amount as mortgage payments!

What would have happened if all that money given for corporate bail outs was given to citizens!
Bail us out of credit card debt, college loans, fuel bills, etc. Give me a bonus for being a good parent and citizen.
I wish the government had done nothing and let the whole economy crash, land on it's face then get up again, wipe off the giant nose bleed, and start from scratch, minus the swagger.
Something major has got to shift. The answers may be simplistic, but as an artist I know that the simpler the design, generally speaking, the better quality. When things are simple there is nothing to hide behind or within.
So simply put, if each person recognized the FACT of our interconnectedness, and internalized the concept of the oneness of humankind we would at least be pointing ourselves in a forward facing direction. This whole us against them gridlock in the world is really getting old. Wake up and smell today's coffee!
We're all in this together, aren't we?

Winter and Molasses Cookies

This collage was made a few winters back, and sold on ebay, so somebody out there has the original. (It actually has a mermaid tail.) I tried to make a one of a kind mermaid paper doll every day for a year, and post, auction it off on ebay. It went on for about 10 months all together, so there are many of them out there, but I just got too busy with other things and couldn't keep it up. Fortunately I had to scan them all in to post them, so still have most of the images.

We've got a couple of wood stoves in our big old house and they are very good at keeping us warm, at least in the rooms that they are in. I like to sit RIGHT in front of the stove, pulling a chair as close as possible, open the doors and just about put my feet inside.

Some people apparently identify our family, in the winter, a mile away by the smoke smell in our clothes.
Today I was out in Lancaster PA, roaming the lush farmlands of the beautiful Amish people. There was a wood stove store along side the road, so I stopped in and bought my husband (chopper of the wood and tender of the flames) a gigantic Paul Bunyan sized speckled blue cast iron teapot to rest on top of the main stove we use, to keep the air moist. It weighs a TON.
When I was in high school in California our family had a really big wood stove in our kitchen that had burners on it. It served dual purposes of warming our house, and my mother actually cooked all our meals on it. The oven worked too! Big sticky cinnamon buns, and bread from loving hands that I can smell/taste right now. We lived in a house that was built up on sticks in the middle of a redwood forest.
My father and a family friend Alan went out chopping wood daily for about a week to create enough wood to fuel our fire for a month or so.
I had made some cookies, dark brown molasses cookies dipped in sugar, that were apparently left too long in the oven. I sent some cookies along with my Dad and Alan's lunch. When they came home, Alan told me that one of the cookies fell into the chain saw and broke the chain.

Last Post This Year on the Firebird Festival

The Firebird Festival was fantastic. The Fire Dept estimated about 5,000 people gathered to watch the bird burn. It was cold but not as cold as years past. It was a crisp and clear night and everyone was happy.

It was so good to see kids walking around carrying the lanterns they made the week beforehand. Unfortunately, The Children's Procession of Light didn't really materialize as envisioned, because it was nearly impossible to round the kids up for the parade. We were to meet in front of the theater at a certain time but not many managed to show up.

The parade itself was kind of strange in that there didn't really seem to BE a parade. Suddenly the bird puppets took off and some of us went with them.......I heard later that we went at the wrong time. Oh well, next year it will be better, now that we are experienced.

The Artisans Bazaar was fantastic and people bought up all birds from the ArtyPantz booth in a period of about one hour, so that was wonderful. In fact planning to make more birds and offer them for sale at www.artypantz.com. Stay tuned for that. Some people who own an art gallery bought one, and asked me to contact them so they could sell them in their gallery. Ho hum. I bought up a bunch of fabric yesterday to make birdies galore.

All in all, the Firebird Festival is a fabulous example of what community art is all about. I can't wait for next year!

Bombing the Moon

Bombing the moon for any reason is just so violent and awful. It's insane and should be illegal. If we don't know enough about the moon to have to bomb it to find out, that in itself is enough of a contraindication.

Isn't NASA funded by the government? As in something else we're paying for that maybe everybody isn't in agreement that we should be doing? Some people are calling it probing the moon. Probing is just to gentle of a word for this. Raping and pillaging the moon is more like it.

On a lighter, brighter note here are two cute moon stories.......one of my daughters was looking into the night sky when she was about three and remarked "the moon is folded in half" and another daughter, at about the same age, once described the shape of the moon as "banana".

Future moon stories might be "I looked up at the man in the moon and he had a big scar on his face."

Creative Contrasting Fall Decor

I love the summer but when fall comes rolling in, it's the beginning of a whole new set of activities, foods, flowers, pumpkins, clothing, etc. Yesterday while taking a walk through a meadow I marveled again at how there is nothing quite as beautiful and stark as freshly fallen red leaves sprinkled all over green grass.

Contrast is the spice of life, and never more so than in nature's design. With that in mind and with Halloween and Thanksgiving looming ahead, I decided to make a patchwork fall table cloth, using contrasting fabrics. The sewing machine is upstairs in the third floor studio, and I kept having to try it on the dining room table, so I got a good workout running up and down the stairs.

That huge wooden table is from Mexico and I got it at Goodwill with two matching long benches and two side chairs for fifty dollars! When I got it home the table was missing the prongs on the bottom that hold it all together........I took alot of good natured heat for that from my husband who is always rolling his eyes at my imperfect used furniture finds.......but all was well when I called the store and they had them in a bag behind the counter......

How do you like those flowers? One trick I've always used is pairing fresh flowers with fake ones, for more va va voom. In this case the large sunflowers are real and the rest silk............Kind of like a padded bra........Haha! Anybody else out there have interesting decorating tricks up their sleeves?

Vermont Here I Come

Tomorrow morning I'm leaving to go visit my friend in Vermont, and realizing this is really the first time I have traveled anywhere by myself in about thirty years. Alone as in without traveling companions, husband, or kids. I'll be taking the train up and back from Philadelphia.

The friend I'm visiting is an artist too, so something creative will surely happen while we're together. She is also my writing partner, even though we haven't written much in the past couple of years. Hopefully we'll do some of that too. But if not I could care less. I have no plans. This is going to be purely living in the moment and my computer is even staying home. It's a nine hour trip and I have already made a picnic and stocked up on books to read.

I love to ride the train and am also taking some Interfaith Golden Rule Coloring Books to give away here and there. I really love the coloring books and feel very happy giving people a complimentary copy. If you would like one, email your shipping address to artypantzvo@verizon.net, and I'll put one in the mail to you next week. Hopefully you'll love it so much that you will order some for all your friends and family.

I have not been to Vermont since I was in my early twenties, when I went on a camping trip up there with a family friend and his two young children, and my new boyfriend. At the time we were all living together in an apartment in Manhatten NY.

We were planning to visit a professor from Goddard College, but from the time we left NY and got to Goddard, Vermont he was literally in the middle of a sit-in in the presidents office at the school! So the trip was full of all that drama and excitement.

We all spent most of our time there in Goddard Lake as in our bathing suits splashing around in.......That boyfriend died many years later long after we'd broken up. He was dancing in Central Park to a group of drummers and dropped dead of a heart attack. He was an incredibly multi-talented, extremely disciplined artist/writer/filmmaker/photographer and I learned so much by being with him. I'm sad that he is gone, but he occasionally visits me in my dreams.

One of those children who was with us in Vermont is now a grown woman and owns a fantastic community restaurant in Brooklyn. She is coming down to visit us next week, with her two children! Can't wait to see them and to hear her laugh. She has the most unique laugh, that wells up inside of you too. When she laughs you're taken along for the ride.......

Choo Choo Cha Boogie

Here's a look at a cute little back pack purse from GrusselDesigns01
What a nice seller, so communicative and accomodating.

And hey, just realized that it matches the blog!

I bought this to take a small backpack, instead of a purse, along with my other backpack for the solo trip I'm taking to Vermont next week to spend a couple of days with one of my very best friends. It's a nine hour train ride to and fro with fun in between that I am really looking forward to. My husband works for Amtrak so I have a train pass which means we get tickets for free.

I once took a three day train trip from Philadelphia to California in the middle of the summer with two of my kids when they were age 3 and an infant......As I planned the trip people kept telling me how crazy it was to take two small children on such a long journey. My feeling was that people used to take that trip in covered wagons with their kids. I had plenty of food, toys, games, art supplies and a credit card for goodness sake.

When the train pulled out of the station in Philadelphia I had a last minute full body adreneline rush and thought to myself "Are you out of your mind?"

But it was a wonderful trip. Traveling has always been a magical experience, and it was no different with my beautiful daughters along. It was easy and everyone was so kind and helpful to us. All the kids on the train came and sat/played with us. We made friends with everyone on the train.

And it was alot of fun on the way back too.......except for one unbelievable and funny now, but not funny then, hitch. We decided to change the route on the way back for different scenery so I had to go to the booth at the station to adjust the tickets.

Imagine my surprise when the ticket issuer called me Susan. He looked on the computer and told me that my husbands wife was Susan. I explained that they were long divorced......that she was a lovely person but that I was his wife NOW and my children were his children. "They look just like him!" I implored as I held them up to the window.

Instead of making me PAY for the tickets, since I was clearly an imposter, he was so gracious and actually called Amtrak in Philadelphia for us. We spoke to someone in charge who just happened to know my husband, and knew that his wife's name was Victoria. Can you believe this?

It seems that my dear sweet husband had forgotten to change the name of his wife in the personell office from Susan's to mine, even though we had been married for about six years by then. You can imagine the tone of my voice when I called HIM later.........

Ding Dong Broken Eggs

It's amazing how good any kind of food tastes when it's real.....as in fresh from a garden or just unprocessed.

I remember traveling through Mexico and Central America in the 70's and marveling on how everything tasted like more of what it was. Bananas were bananaier, chicken chickenier, carrots carrotier and so on. I had a cantelope smoothie one evening in the center (el centro) of a small village in Oxaca, Mexico while watching women with long woven skirts and lavishly hand embroidered flower blouses float around the square. The smoothie was smoother, the skirts and blouses more colorful and hey the woman were even more womanly. Everything was super charged. It was twilight and there were millions of trilling birds in the trees, and in the air. A fluttering crescendo in silhouette against the sky and branches.

I have a friend here who's father raises chickens. They run around freely and eat a healthy diet. The yolks of their eggs are strikingly ORANGE, beautiful and delicious when cooked. They taste eggier.

Yesterday I was coming in the front door with three dozen of these lovelies, plus numerous bags of groceries, a large box of laundry soap and a bag of dog food. I leaned forward to hit the doorbell with my elbow because my hands were full.

I just had to get the camera and take a picture of what happened next.

Sneak Preview of The Golden Rule Coloring Book

The drawings and layout are absolutely finished for The Golden Rule accordion coloring book. Here is a sneak peak at the cover page. .....

It is amazing what kind of scrutiny has gone into every inch of this. All the drawings have to be PERFECT! .........The book measures 5 1/2" high and unfolds to two feet long! I'll be posting pictures of all the pages, once I get one colored.

This book is designed for ages 4 through adult

and features The Golden Rule excerpts from
Traditional African Religion
Christianity
Buddhism
Baha’i Faith

Islam,
Judaism
Confucianism
Hindu

and Native American Wisdom

and is adorned with images of flowers, butterflies and birds.

Still working on the packaging, but it will be fairly simple now that the book is done. This project is a complete distration from what I "should" be doing as in getting WrapADoodles ready for the La Leche League Conference coming up in two weeks but it feels like the "right" thing to be doing now.

Stay tuned to see how and where you can get one!

Making an Ironing Board Cover

Today I went to a class at The Quilt Block to learn how to make a quilted ironing board cover. You were supposed to bring your old one to use as a pattern. That was pretty embarrasing because mine looked like an old undergarment or something........I knew it was ugly but never just how so until it was off the board and in my hands. Ironing is such a big part of sewing and I really wanted a beautiful cover so out went the old and in came the new!
The class was such a wonderful learning experience. My teacher was so kind and patient and I received undivided attention since as it turned out I was the only person who actually showed up to the class! It was a leisurely afternoon, pretty quiet in the store, and so we got to know each other a bit in the process.

I learned so much. and hard to believe it, but actually broke down and purchased a measuring instrument! It's a jumbo see through heavy plastic ruler measuring 6" x 24" that has all kinds of lines, curves, inches, etc all over it. I can use it for art stuff too. I also got a rotary cutter which looks like a pizza cutter but it's for fabric. Up until today if I needed to cut straight I just made a nick and tore the fabric........apparently that is a NO NO and those kind of cutting days are over. After using the scissors in the store, by comparison mine felt like I was cutting with a pair of butter knives strapped together. So I got some super sharp scissors too.

The Quilt Block has been in business for two years now but it's a fairly recent happy discovery for me. A few months ago while semi lost in my car (a common occurance), I spied the shop tucked behind a bank, not too far from home. Being a fabric junkie I slammed on the breaks, hopped out, ran in, and now look for any excuse to go there.

I just happened to have a WrapADoodle with me that day, and took it in to show and tell, knowing that all women who sew love to see each other's work. The proprietors of the store were both there that day and they are just the nicest people ever. While I gushed over their store, they encouraged me to make a pattern for the WrapADoodle to sell in their store and in other stores.....so I put that thought into my pipe and have been smoking it ever since.
I love this store so much. It's in an old house with wide plank wooden floors. It's full of neatly and creatively arranged fabric, quilts, patterns, samples, etc. The atmosphere is so clean and inviting. I've been in and out of there a few times. Each time somebody there encourages me to make patterns and each time the thought goes into my pipe. I met some very interesting quilters in there a week or so ago and will post about them sooner than later.
In the meantime, now that I have all the proper tools, I'm going to take another class there one day. I bought an interesting book on the way out the door about making floorcloths with fabric and that will probably be the next project. Painted floorcloths are beautiful, but the fabric ones they have on the floor as samples in the store are stunningly brilliant.

Almost done with The Golden Rule coloring book. It is unbelievable how much time and energy is going into such a simple little endeavor, but hopefully it will be worth it in the long run. I need to finish it so it can be moved out of my mind while I get muchos WrapADoodles ready for an exhibit at the La Leche League Conference coming up in mid July!

The Golden Rule

Back in those days, not so long ago, when my studio was a mess I would walk in and walk right back out because the chaos made me even more crazy than usual, but now that I've moved into two organized spaces on the third floor, I could stay up here forever.........I've been holed up in these tippy top studios for days now (see top windows in the picture above). For awhile there it was hell as in inferno, but my dear husband put an air conditioner in and now it's heaven. By the way, that pink thing in the lower right hand corner is a pink flamingo that my daughter found in the trash.

I often miss events, parties, meetings, etc. Sorry about that but I have to be here now. I did drag myself out on Thursday to make books with kids of people who came to a prayer vigil for the imprisoned Baha'is in Iran. (Click on Baha'i in blog labels to learn more about this dire situation.)

Being in and working in my own space is the best. I've always chosen to live somewhere beautiful and surrounded by nature even if it means renting instead of buying. I've also been fortunate to be able to choose time over money, so never had the need to go on vacation or escape from my life.
I love so many people, including those to be met, but happiness abounds in solitude. Ideas take hold, squeeze hard, and won't let go until they are materialized. That is just the way it is. I have to SEE my idea in front of my eyes right now. And the ideas keep coming, like a hose on full blast.

There is so much tension in the world between different kinds of people, and every time I see evidence of it I want to do something to help. The world's problems boil down to one pervasive concept. Somebody thinks they are better than someone else. Their country is better, or their religion, or the way they eat, or raise their kids, etc, etc, etc. This attitude is truly the root of all evil in the world. Just think about it.

No one person is qualified to hold themselves over another person. The fundamental problem of presumed superiority is a sign of spiritual immaturity, and ignorance of the spiritual and scientific fact that we are all One. And for those who believe in God, that means One God, the Same God for everyone. I hope never to see a bumper sticker that says My God Beat up Your God.......but that is kind of what is going on these days.....

In light of all this, in my ongoing efforts to bring people together through the arts, I'm in the process of creating an accordion folded coloring book on the theme of The Golden Rule, using quotes from Traditional African Religion, Hinduism, The Baha'i Faith, Christianity, Judaism, Confucism, Islam and Native American Wisdom. It's such a simple concept to treat people the way you want to be treated. Putting this into practice is probably the very best thing we all can do to help make a better world. That and working on improving our own conduct and character and aspiring to be the kind of person we want others to be.

It's very fun to be drawing again. I'm integrating images of birds, butterflies, flowers and a couple of people in and among the writings. The whole thing will be printed on an 11 x 17 paper, folded and cut, then folded again into the accordion shape. I'll punch holes and tie some gold ribbon or threads on either end of the accordion, then place them in cellophane envelopes and start offering them in various venues.

I'm almost done with it, but just when it seems to be finished, it's not. So it looks like I'll be here a little while longer.

Prom Number Two

My son plays the piano, harmonica, saxaphone, and a little guitar, sings and goes to the School of Rock. One of the kids who goes there, and who works there too had the brilliant idea to have a School of Rock Prom..........Everyone wanted to get dressed up and have a good time. My son wanted to wear a zoot suit at first. I'm reluctant to spend money on any kind of suit for him these days. He's 14 and already taller than me and will probably grow a foot this summer.

So we hit a thrift shop and found a three piece pin striped suit with a vest, a beautiful white shirt with patterned collar and cuffs, plus a fabulous pair of regular pants, all for $18.00. This was so easy, and such a far cry from my daughter's senior prom dress saga.

This time I was on the decorating committee and got to make some big wild mobiles using old record jackets cut into big stars, sheet music, 45's CD's and some of those metallic spiral things that they sell at the dollar store to keep birds away. That was alot of fun!

My daughter made a beautiful roses bouquet, and rose corsage for the Rock Prom couple.......

We went to pick up his beautiful bass playing date, who lived way out in the country. We got lost on the way to the Rock Prom and wound up in another state. What should have been a twenty minute ride took an hour and twenty minutes! Fortunately, everyone was in good spirits and we had lots of laughs along the way.

My son wound up being crowned the School of Rock Prom King for being the classiest guy there. He picked his classy Queen out of four finalists............It was a wonderful evening, a fantastic collaboration of parents, staff and kids.
