Merry Christmas to All

We are headed out this afternoon to a Christmas Open House
and these are the Xmas Tree Lady ornaments I made to take as a hostess gift.
They are about 8" high.

I'm so seriously thinking about writing and illustrating a book on making things out of paper!
There is so much beautiful paper available these days. Very inspiring.

Just finishing up the last touches for the ArtyPantz booth at the Phoenixville Firebird Festival.
In celebration of the bird.....here are some of this years offerings.

Stitched paper birds with fan tails

Cloth and paper birds

Wild Phoenix Wands

The festival starts Saturday December 11th at 4:00.

Dancing Owl Stick Puppets Trio

Last week I woke up from a dream where I was making owl puppets. Obviously birds are on the brain....
Just finished bringing the dream to life and you can get them on etsy! They are printed on heavy card stock, hand cut and assembled. Each owl has two wings that are attached with paper fasteners so they can move.
Click here to go there and buy them by the trio!

Handmade in the USA

Here is one more example of how out of whack things are in this world. And it really says it all.

British Pertoleum and their corporate practices killed eleven people last month, and are in the "no end in sight" process of killing marine and wildlife, killing vegetation, polluting the air, basically destroying the ocean, the earth and all living things therein. Why, because money makes their world go around and they didn't want to spend it on safety.
Meanwhile, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is breathing down the necks of hundreds of small businesses that lovingly handcraft beautiful things for babies and children, attempting to lump them in with the big corporations, such as the ones who imported mass produced lead laden plastic crap from CHINA.
CPSC has legislation on the table that may be forcing ridiculous testing and other regulations that will put talented and caring American artisans and craftspeople out of business. At a time when unemployment is a real issue for many families.

Please join the Handmade Toy Alliance and get this legislation amended. There will be a segment on 60 minutes tomorrow night about it.

Phoenix Exhibit at Artisans Cafe in Phoenixville

If you are in Phoenixville anytime in the Month of February, please drop by The Artisans Cafe on Bridge Street and check out the art exhibit inspired by the Phoenix! My painting "Phoenix Woman" s on display there, and some fiber art phoenixes in nests as pictured above. Also featured are clay birds by Lisa Muller and friends, stunning photograph art of Henrik Stubbe Teglbjaerg, plus limited signed editions of Henrik's Firebird Photo Book. Artist Lynn Miller contributed acrylic paintings on mirrors, canvas and hand drums, a beaded piece on wood, plus a lamp! There is an inspired oil painting too but can't remember the artists' name.

Making a Painting Inspired by the Phoenix

I'm really trying to concentrate on getting the whole WrapADoodle baby blanket adventure together, but just couldn't resist the offer a couple of months ago to do a painting for an upcoming art exhibit on the theme of the Phoenix....
It's been chaotic around here lately with kids home on college break, holidays, wisdom teeth yanked out of one, another burnt his hand badly in a chicken breast cooking accident, grandson and daughter birthdays, and so on.
Yesterday today and tomorrow I'm subbing for an artist/art teacher friend for K through 8th grade. Highlight of the day today, after pulling a hair from my chin and noticing it was grey.....was when a kindergartner asked me if I had a baby in my tummy? It just doesn't get any better than that.
But anyway, this evening I finally got around to drawing a sketch in the little book I've been carrying around in my purse lately. The painting is due in a couple of days so there is a bit of pressure here to get it done.

Once I've drawn a sketch, then the process begins. It's like writing the first sentence of the story. It may wind up being changed a little or a lot, or be eliminated all together. It may be replaced with the start of a completely different story. But it is the beginning of the way I paint my pictures. The painting may not look anything like the sketch at all!

I was once asked to teach painting at our local Main Line School night and just had to laugh! because I have no idea how to paint. I basically use four brushes: really small, small, medium and large. Then, just squirt the paint out, mix it together to make the desired color, and apply. I simply do this over and over again until it looks right.
For me making a painting is all about decisions made along the way. So I spend way more time looking at it then painting it.

Hummingbird Hat

For a long time I was really into mermaids, and created a whole line of Swinging Tail Paper Dolls called the Magnetic Personalities . These dolls are still for sale on my website, including but not limited to a Mae West Mermaid, Frida Kahlo, the Statue of Liberty and more......But for the past year or so birds have taken over.
Come to think of it all of those mermaid paper dolls do have wings.....so maybe this Year of the Bird that I feel coming on isn't really much of a leap.....haha! In a couple of weeks or so I'll be a adding a whole collection of everyday bird ornaments called "Little Birdie Sing to Me" to my etsy store. Stay tuned for that.
Right now I'm in the process of designing a large painting of a woman with phoenix wings for an art exhibit in February!

Peace on Earth Birds for Firebird Festival

I designed these little birds to make and sell at the Phoenixville Firebird Festival this year. They're made with beautiful contrasting embroidered drapery fabrics, sewn together and stuffed. The tails are made of flat ribbon tied into pom poms. The eyes are tiny seed beads sewn on to both sides of the head. The hangers are made with wire, beads, and jewelry making tools. I recently took a class on how to make earrings and the wire bending techniques really came in handy for this project.

The first picture shows a bunch of them in gift bags, made from bigger gift bags. Peace on earth was stamped on pretty paper and glued onto the side of the bag. The sparkly nesting material is a nice finishing touch! What a nice gift.......I'll make extras to give to special friends and family....

I bought a live tree with wispy branches to hang the birds on, out of the bags. There will be some birds underneath the tree in the bags.....That will make a lovely presentation.

Hope everyone can make it to the Firebird Festival on December 21st. Every year it just gets better....

Creative Contrasting Fall Decor

I love the summer but when fall comes rolling in, it's the beginning of a whole new set of activities, foods, flowers, pumpkins, clothing, etc. Yesterday while taking a walk through a meadow I marveled again at how there is nothing quite as beautiful and stark as freshly fallen red leaves sprinkled all over green grass.

Contrast is the spice of life, and never more so than in nature's design. With that in mind and with Halloween and Thanksgiving looming ahead, I decided to make a patchwork fall table cloth, using contrasting fabrics. The sewing machine is upstairs in the third floor studio, and I kept having to try it on the dining room table, so I got a good workout running up and down the stairs.

That huge wooden table is from Mexico and I got it at Goodwill with two matching long benches and two side chairs for fifty dollars! When I got it home the table was missing the prongs on the bottom that hold it all together........I took alot of good natured heat for that from my husband who is always rolling his eyes at my imperfect used furniture finds.......but all was well when I called the store and they had them in a bag behind the counter......

How do you like those flowers? One trick I've always used is pairing fresh flowers with fake ones, for more va va voom. In this case the large sunflowers are real and the rest silk............Kind of like a padded bra........Haha! Anybody else out there have interesting decorating tricks up their sleeves?
