Hand Turkey
Here is an except from my Creative Blast column on Handmade in PA today.
While drawing this hand turkey for today’s blog post, I just had to laugh. At the age of 16 I picked up a pen one day, started to draw, and knew how. At the time it was generally assumed by all that I would grow up and become a writer one day, which come to think about it does seem to have come true after all. But drawing kind of took over there for awhile, and then onto painting, and fiber art and on and on.
Anyway, I illustrated many of my teenage poems and stories with simple line drawings. A family artist friend, the now famous Pennsylvania born and bred Kitty Wallis (known for her beautiful pastels and pastel paper she invented) commented that there were no hands on any of the people. Look Ma! No hands!

The Day I Painted The Ceiling of my Husband's Cadillac
My column, Creative Blast is live today on Handmade in PA. Here is an excerpt:
THE DAY I PAINTED THE CEILING OF MY HUSBAND'S CADILLAC
My husband Pat has twice now gone out to buy a work truck and come home with a Cadillac. The first time it happened he left in the evening to go to a car auction. He came home in the middle of night and woke me up.
“Hmm”, I asked sleepily, “Did you get a truck?”
“No. I got a Cadillac.”
“Huh?”
He was really excited about this car and had to show it off right then and there. We went outside and there it stood, light pink, in the driveway, sparkling like a glass of champagne in the moonlight.
He opened the passenger door for me, and we admired the leather seats and the inlaid wood on the dashboard.
“Watch this!” He backed up several yards, then opened and closed the trunk from that distance with a press on the keys. This was many years ago and quite the big deal at the time……..
The next morning we took Champagne for a twirl. One of our daughters was in kindergarten and home sick that day, so we sandwiched her in between us in the front seat. She threw up all over the dashboard about a mile into the trip, and Pat yanked off his shirt to mop it up without missing a revolution of the tires.

Creative Blast on Handmade in PA Do You Have a Cheerleader?
Please check out my column at Handmade in PA today, it's about getting by as an artist.
Do You Have A Cheerleader?

I read once somewhere that most artists are subsidized by grants, or a family member. I recently applied for the Transformation Award from The Leeway Foundation for my interactive theatrical storytelling events and would jump for joy, after sobbing with happiness and gratitude, if that happens.
My first real job outside our family newspaper in California was as a sign maker for a record store, which escalated into being an art director for the entire chain. I learned so much about music, met and hobnobbed with record company executives, and had free front row tickets to many fabulous concerts.
Across town, some of my friends were selling copy machine toner over the telephone and making ten times as much as me. After declaring I’d never sell anything over the phone and watching my friends buy seaside Victorian houses, cars and horses, I eventually left art and went to work with them. My salary went to the moon and beyond.
After moving to Pennsylvania I continued working in sales, and at one pivotal point, was offered the position of assistant manager.......read the rest of this article at Handmade in PA blog

Home is Where the Art Is
I'm enjoying writing a column for Handmade in PA. My column is called Creative Blast! and today's topic was Home is Where the Art Is:
Here's the beginning of the article:
Nurturing creativity is an ongoing process and starts when the kids are little. A friend once said that there is nothing better for the planet than people getting together and being creative. She is so right!
Homes are designed with home offices, in law suites, laundry rooms, entertainment centers, nanny quarters etc……Until a Creativity Center is automatically added to that why not just take that formal dining room or extra bedroom and turn it into a Creativity Room? Read the whole article

One of my favorite blogs is Handmade in PA. which seeks to be the premiere site for bringing Pennsylvania artisans & shoppers together. The blog features interviews, hosts giveaways, publishes tutorials, and offers business & shopping advice – all in the name of supporting the handmade movement in Pennsylvania.
I'm excited about becoming a regular columnist for Handmade in PA, starting June 28th with a tutorial on making upcycled gift bags! The name of my column will be Creative Blast and will be published every other Monday.
