Ground Hog Close Up

Today I read an entry from one of my favorite blogs called On The Front Porch. I love reading it because Wendy (the blogger) is such a good and funny writer. Today she wrote an engaging story about seeing a ground hog with her mother. Whenever she writes about her mother, it always makes me laugh. http://wendysees.blogspot.com/

Anyway, reading Wendy's groundhog story made me want to tell MY groundhog story, and so here it goes.

First of all, ever since seeing a horror movie about a giantic hamster, and Willard, I am afraid of every kind of hairy rodent, like mice, guinea pigs, gerbils, bats etc. I always image them running up my pant leg, and/or in the case of bats, them landing on me and sucking all the blood out of me.

Whenever I see a ground hog I scream because they are just bigger hairier versions of other rodents. Usually I see one running across the street. They completely gross me out! I want to scream right now just thinking about them.

One day my son, Shea came into the house and said there was some kind of animal on the path by the creek going out towards the field. I went to the front door, stepped out to investigate and looked over yonder in the direction he was pointing.

Ever since I hit 50, or 50 hit me, I can't see, hear, or remember anything so all I could make out was a little brown blob in the distance. It was at least 200 yards away.

Shea found some binoculars and handed them over. The binoculars we have are heavy duty and really get the job done. But I fogot all about the superior magnification aspect of binoculars, and put them up to my eyes. And there seeming like two inches from my face was a horror movie version of a gigantic ground hog! I screamed and dropped the binoculars on my foot, and ran screaming some more into the house.

Photo of groundhog is Bill Smith. Here's a link to his photo gallery.

HA HA HA. I laughed so hard at the thought of a big groundhog 50 times lifesize through the binoculars.

See, for you it's better to use them like my son -- BACKWARDS -- and then the groundhog will look very tiny.

Too funny. Thanks for the great story and the great mention of my blog. Next time I will try to write something more fun for you like a chocolate fondue or maybe a day spa or... ART! I don't know, somehow art doesn't seem like it lends itself to funny stories, though.

I'll work on it!

Funny! I think I would have done the same thing. I remember the Willard movie, my brother saw it when he was in high school and I recall him telling us all about it when he came home from his date....also, Willard is his middle name and we didn't hear it much.
